Body Piercing as a Body Art

The art of individualizing and decorating body with piercing and tattoos dates back as early as the Ice Age. Throughout history, there have been many ways that people have customized their bodies by piercing body parts or by painting or tattooing art onto their skin. The practice lives on, as more and more people around the world discover body art of piercing.
Today we see many forms of body customization of both sexes, however there is a rich history behind all body-customizing traditions that started with one particular sex. We normally characterize a large difference between modern body customization and barbaric means of changing the natural body.

Body piercing has become very popular with adolescents and adults in their early twenties. While the general public and parents may perceive this procedure as rebellious and deviant behavior, some reasons adolescents offer for body piercing is that it is a form of body art, it is fashionable, and it makes a personal statement. No two piercing can be identical, because no two faces, bodies, or genitalia are alike.
Piercing is a profoundly personal experience. It changes not only the way in which others perceive a person but also the way that person perceives himself or herself. This change is in both ones own self-identification and other peoples perception of a person is, for many, an integral part of the decision to become pierced.
